Another ABUAD Student Wins National Laurel

The harvest of Awards, commendations and encomiums that has been the lot of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has continued with Oluwaseye Bolaji Oguntuase, a 500 Level Mechanical Engineering student of the six-year old University winning the 1st National Engineering Students’ Competition in Abuja on June 30, 2016.

Oguntuase’s project, titled “Autonomous Pipeline leakage in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria” beat 36 other contestants from the country’s six geo-political zones in a competition organized by the Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology of Nigerian Universities (CODET).

For his efforts and success, Ogutuase went home with the sum of N250,000 and a Certificate.

Oguntuase’s journey to stardom started in May 2016 when 17 universities from the South-West Zone converged at the premier university, University of Ibadan, for the Zonal competition. At the conclusion of the Zonal competition, Oguntuase came third with his project titled “Autonomous Pipeline leakage detecting system in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria” after his colleague, John Etudor, a 500 Level Mechatronics Engineering Student of ABUAD, whose project was titled “Novel Autonomous Fire Fighting Robot”. Ahmed Oyenuga from Osun State University emerged the Zonal Champion and went home with a prize of N50,000.

For their efforts and achievements, Etudo who came second went home with N30,000 while Oguntuase who would later emerge the overall winner, coasting home a princely prize of N250,000 and a Certificate, won N20,000 at the Zonal level.

At the final stage of the competition which took place at the National Space and Research Development Agency, Obasanjo Space Center, Abuja, ABUAD presented the two zonal winners in individual category (Etudor and Oguntuase) to represent the South-West zone at the National level at the end of which Oguntuase emerged the first winner of the 1st National Engineering Students’ Competition.

Oguntuase, and by inference another ABUAD’s moment of glory came less than one month after Mr. Olamide Popoola, a 2015 Petroleum Engineering graduate from ABUAD, who is currently on the mandatory one-year National service, put the six-year old university on the world map again by leading his team, “Team Nigeria” to win this year’s edition of the Unilever Idea Trophy in Category Number 1 Award for “Authentically on Brand, Relevant to target Audience and Drives Talkability and Shareability (A.R.T)”.

The same “Team Nigeria”, is made up of Popoola, a 2015 Petroleum Engineering graduate from ABUAD, who is currently on the mandatory one-year National service, Adekunle Adepoju, a student from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo and Jennifer Ikeokwu, a student from Babcock University, Ilishan.
