The department was established in 2013, when the first set of enrolled students were at 300 level to begin the training of being produced as quality engineers of excellent academic and professional competences of the degree of Bachelors in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. This department was established with a student population of 137 comprising of 44 chemical engineering students and 93 petroleum engineering students and staff strength of 14 comprising of Prof. A. I. Igbafe as the head of department together with Dr. (Miss) U. M. Okorie, Dr. (Mrs.) P. Babatunde, four chemical engineering and seven petroleum engineering lecturers grade II. The department is located within the ultramodern four-storey college of engineering building occupying the fourth quadrangle of the building. It is headed by a professor of engineering and a registered engineer by the council for the regulation of engineers in Nigeria. Recently for the purpose of expert touch, the department adopted the use of programme coordinators, one for the chemical engineering programme and the other for petroleum engineering programme. These coordinators, who are of the rank of senior lecturer and above, possess a PhD in the programme they are coordinating and must be registered engineers by the council for the regulation of engineers in Nigeria. The department is equipped with a computer room, library, six large well ventilated classroom three of which caters for the 300 level to 500 level chemical engineering students and the other three caters for the 300 level to 500 level petroleum engineering students. The department also has seven laboratories comprising of four for the chemical engineering programme and three for the petroleum engineering programme and a seminar/boardroom.
