Background History of the Federal Medical Centre, Ido –Ekiti, Ekiti State

The Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ekiti was established in July, 1998 as a metamorphosed Ido-Ekiti General Hospital which was established in 1954. As a tertiary health institution it serves as a Reference Centre for all other health institutions (Specialist Hospitals, General Hospitals, and Comprehensive Health Centres etc.) in Ekiti State.

Under the two previous administrations between 1998 and 2003 the hospital established six departments, including the clinical and the supportive departments. In the last seven years under the leadership of Dr (Mrs.) Ololade Olushola Ojo, the hospital has witnessed great transformation.

VISION

The vision of Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ekiti is to reduce morbidity, disability and mortality due to Communicable and Non-Communicable diseases to the barest minimum in Ekiti State, meet global targets in elimination and eradication of these diseases and significantly increase the life expectancy and quality of life of the people of Ekiti State and South West geo-political zone of the country.

MISSION

Our mission is to use highly skilled staff, modern techniques and technologies to deliver timely, efficient, qualitative, easily accessible, equitable and affordable health care services tailored to the consumer needs of the teeming population of Ekiti state and its environ and also train all cadres of health delivery staff, thereby strengthening the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health care delivery services in the state and the nation.

The hospital now has 24 fully functional departments comprising 18 clinical departments manned by specialists and 5 supportive departments. The bed complement has also increased from 77 to 280 and is distributed as follows:

Current Services

Presently, FMC Ido-Ekiti offers services in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Health Care Services.

The Community Health Department of the hospital conducts the Primary Health Care services such as routine Immunization (0-5 years and pregnant women), antenatal care, infant welfare clinics, school health programmes, family planning, food and nutrition services and outreach health programmes.

The hospital as a tertiary health care centre receives patients from all health institutions in the state and referrals from other States of South-West geo-political zone.

The consultants at FMC Ido-Ekiti engage in clinical works, teaching and training of resident doctors. We also conduct internship training for Doctors, Pharmacists and Laboratory Scientists. Presently, the hospital is accredited by both West African and National Postgraduate Medical Colleges to train Resident Doctors in Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Paediatric Departments. The Community Medicine department and Pathology Department are awaiting the accreditation panels from the colleges anytime from now.
