ABUAD LEADS, OTHERS FOLLOW: MISS ADEDAMOLA FALOLU TOLULOPE, A 400 LEVEL STUDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SCIENCE, ADORNED AND HONOURED AS FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FOR 2015
May 11, 2015 will forever remain indelible in the annals of the Department of Nursing Science, and in the minds of the students of the noble profession of Nursing. A 15-person delegation which included students in the 200, 300 and 400 levels, traveled to Abuja where they participated in the Annual International Nurse’s Week which was held at the Nigeria Air Force Conference Center, Kado, Abuja (FCT). The delegation was headed by the President of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association(NUNSA), ABUAD chapter, Master Shotade Aboyomi, and this trip came on the heels of the recent induction ceremony of the EXCO members of NUNSA, ABUAD chapter.
The climax of the event saw our very own Adedamola Falolu Tolulope hoisting the flag of ABUAD at its peak; especially as her intelligence and gracefulness did not only distinguish her from other students from other universities in Nigeria, but held every attendee spell-bound!!! Throughout the event, this student from the prestigious ABUAD, became the centre of attraction to everyone in attendance. In commemoration of the Mother of modern Nursing, Florence Nightingale and in the tradition of the noble profession, Miss Falolu was adorned in Florence Nightingale’s garment and labeled; “the torch-bearer for Nurses in Nigeria for the year 2015.”
The honorable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, the Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Mr. Abdulrakeem Alani Adeniji, the representative of the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Heads of Departments of Nursing Science across the Federation, and student-nurses from other universities and representatives of diverse political parties were in attendance to grace the occasion.
Highlights of the event included lectures and discussions pertaining to pertinent issues affecting the welfare of nursing students in Nigeria and suggested solution-options. The goal was to highlight and examine prevailing nursing practices with a focus on a clear reflection of inter-related professionalism, free of all forms of biases against any cadre of the health care system, while providing quality health care services to clients. This new development is expected to provide greater professional satisfaction to nurses.
It is important to note, that the honorable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, was in ABUAD some months back. During that visit, he completed reviews which gave the College of Medicine and Health Sciences a new impetus through a full accreditation for the Department of Medicine and Surgery. With this additional feather to the cap of the Provost of this prestigious College, Professor Joseph Olurotimi Sanya, we cannot but say to our Founder, Aare Afe Babalola, Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Nous sommes vraiment fiers de vous!!! ABUAD is indeed a place to be!!!
