ABUAD Makes Green History, Launches Carbon Neutrality Policy and Plan

As part of its commitment to achieve a carbon neutral university campus by the year 2029,

ABUAD has developed and launched its Energy and Utilities Sustainability Master Plan as a roadmap for achieving long-term goals and strategies that support the mission and vision of the University to enhance energy efficiency and conservation practices across all facilities, buildings, and campuses of ABUAD.

The ABUAD Energy and Utilities Sustainability Master Plan represents one of the first and most comprehensive commitments to climate action and carbon neutrality by any University in Nigeria. It sets the goal of achieving a 100% shift to electricity generated from renewable energy sources across ABUAD campus before 2030. It also contains an express commitment and pledge to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ABUAD by 100% by December 31, 2029, and to become a carbon neutral campus before the year 2029. The Plan charges the ABUAD Directorate of Works and Utilities to continue to provide “world class” energy services to support ABUAD as a top and fastest growing university in Nigeria.

While addressing faculty, staff and students at a brief launching ceremony held at the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ABUAD in the White Rock, the Chairman of the University Sustainability Committee and DVC (ARISP), Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN noted that

“This innovative Plan establishes the framework for acceptable protocols, practices, and operational standards that in support of the University’s Strategic Direction, focus on furthering academic excellence, create a positive communal impact, and foster innovation to positively impact social transformation. The Plan elaborates strategic programs, activities and partnerships to guide sustainability planning, budgeting, operations, and all aspects of the University.  We thank all our partners, NGOs, government institutions, and faculty members for their contributions in shaping the development of this plan and we look forward to its collaborative implementation”

The DVC (ARISP) thanked the Chancellor and Founder of the University, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, OFR for his inspirational leadership and commitment to sustainability and climate action, without which the launching of the framework plan would not have been possible. He also commended the Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, FCArb, FCAI for the trust in the work of the Sustainability Office and Committee which has resulted in the crystallization of a climate action and plan.
