The ABUAD Staff football team won a thrilling Ado-Ekiti derby as the Nigerian Union of Journalists team lost by two goals to four. The football match which was the best of novelty was a pulsating, ever changing derby encounter with lots of thrills and frills organized as part of activities marking the grand finale of 2012 Press Week of the Ekiti State Branch of the NUJ. ABUAD had initially scored a brace to take the lead in the first ten minutes before the NUJ led by Skipper Laolu Omosilade turned the game on its head by a thunderous shot that left ABUAD goalkeeper mesmerized. The first half ended with ABUAD Staff dictating the pace. On resumption of the second half, the NUJ came with renewed vigour, substituted four players and displayed a master piece culminating in robust tackling, sharp short and incisive passes which resulted into two goals within a spate of fifteen minutes. The ding-dong affair continued unabated. ABUAD Staff came back strongly in the remaining 30 minutes with two volleys, the first in the fourth minute from a corner which trickled into the NUJ net. The second goal for ABUAD came at the dying minute and broke the camel’s back. Indeed, it was a deserved victory for the host team. The capacity crowd at the ABUAD Sports Arena cheered endlessly as the two sides tried each other for size. After good combinative works on the right wing the pin-point cross of ABUAD winger was beautifully converted by Pius Ibiyoye whose diving header gave NUJ keeper no chance. However, an infringement in the ABUAD eighteen which resulted into a penalty kick was squandered by the NUJ Skipper. The game ended 4-2 in favour of ABUAD Staff team. Earlier, the guest of honour, the Catholic Arch. Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ajakaiye met the players and took the kick off. Many dignitaries including top management Staff of ABUAD, NUJ Executive Officers and members and football lovers from all the nooks and cranies of the State graced the occasion.
