Overview
Banking and finance is one of the high sounding programmes of the College of Social and Management Sciences. It started as one of the pioneer programmes of this great University during the 2009/2010 academic session.
The programme currently has eight academic staff, five (5) of which are on full time and the remaining are adjunct lecturers. In the 2012/2013 session, Dr Alawiye-Adams, an Associate Professor, was appointed with the headship of the department till date. The department is, however, set to graduate her first set of students in this 2012/2013 session
Our Philosophy
The importance of seasoned bankers and financial experts in nation building and economic transformation can in no way be over-emphasized. The programme in Banking & Finance is focused on equipping students with outstanding intellectual competence and financial engineering prowess to be strategically balanced and prepared to respond to the ever dynamic challenges of the Banking and Finance industry.
The programme of Banking and finance at Afe Babalola University uniquely distinguishes itself from others in that it is established to prepare students for the bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance, as well as encourage, develop, support and prepare the students for the professional examinations of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. Students of Banking and Finance are therefore expected on graduation to obtain both the Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Banking and Finance and the professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. Every graduate of this department is prepared to be a total man capable of gaining high quality employment in the Industry or gainfully self employed.
Our Objectives
I. To produce graduates who are equipped with comprehensive knowledge of banking, financial engineering, and modern techniques in related functional and research disciplines, and best practices and who are therefore self-confident and poised to assume different managerial positions in both the private and public enterprises in the emerging local, national and global economy.
II. To produce graduates who can confidently and proactively respond to the ever dynamic challenges of banking, finance and investment management and sharpening their intellectual curiosity to strategically resolve issues arising from statutory, professional and economic development.
III. To produce graduates who are inspired in demonstrating the work ethics required in a production economy resulting in self-reliance, sound moral character and self actualization.
IV. To build strong interest in graduates in developing career in academia for sustainability in learning and human capital development and to equip them with unique academic foundation and exceptional intellectual training to pursue further studies.

Linkages/ Affiliation
On the professional Banking and Finance aspect, the department closely relates within the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). Our students are made more involved in practical banking aspects by being linked up with CIBN programmes. The CIBN degree linkage arrangement is being considered by Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti to enable the department to be more up-to-date on industry events and translate theoretical knowledge for the students’ benefit. Interested students are encouraged to register with the Institute before they graduate from the University. Upon graduation, the students are granted due exemptions from some of the papers that they have written while in the University. The reports of students’ performances in the examinations have been heart-warming.

The practice licence is also granted by CIBN to eligible bankers to perform in any of the following capacities:

3. Consultants in Banking and Finance
4. Arbitrators, mediators and conciliators in Banking and Finance matters
5. Trainers in Banking and Finance
6. Financial investigators/ supervisors/ examiners
7. Auditing of Financial Institutions’ financial accounts and other statements
8. Trustees
9. Financial advisers/ counselors
10. Credit analysts, administrators and managers
11. Loan/credit adjusters
12. Industry analysts and any allied matters

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Ø Minimum qualification for B. Sc Banking and Finance is 5 credits including English language, Mathematics and three other subjects at GCE/SSCE/NECO examinations or their equivalent (at not more than 2 sittings).
Ø Candidates awaiting O’ Level results can apply but will be required to present acceptable qualifications before matriculation.
