Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop (rim) at each end. It is played both indoor and outdoor. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one, two or three one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated. There are five positions in basketball namely, center, power forward, small forward, shooting guard and point guard. Fouls occur either through “excessive” or “unnecessary contact” which are pushing, hitting, slapping, holding, and dragging. Some of the rules in basketball are Double dribble/bounce: it occurs when a player ends their dribble by catching or causing the ball to come to rest in one or both hands and then dribbles it again with one hand or when a player touches it before the ball hits the ground. Whenever the ball is being terminated, you must either pass it to an open teammate or shoot the ball at the basket. Traveling: it is a violation that occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or both their feet illegally. That is, when a player takes too many steps without dribbling. In order to move, you must keep bouncing the ball. Kick Ball Violation: it occurs when a player intentionally kicks the ball. Basketball players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fist.
