As part of the programmes scheduled for ABUAD Students for the second semester 2012/2013 academic session, a lecturer from the department of Anatomy, College of Medicine and Health Science, in collaboration with the Guidance and Counseling Unit ABUAD, organized a three day Seminar on Brain Awareness.
The Seminar which attracted many contributions from various institutions of both government and non – Governmental organizations took place at Owolabi hall, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, on 17th – 19th April, 2013.
As the event took its stand with the opening remarks delivered by Prof. Sidi Osho, Vice Chancellor of the institution, the organizers of the event (Dr. Mrs. F. Ojo, Head, Guidance and Counseling Unit, ABUAD and Mr. Philip A. Adeniyi, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, ABUAD) were acknowledged in her speech.
In the first lecture delivered by the Provost, College of Medicine, ABUAD, Dr. J. O. Sanya, made it known that the brain is a small but integral part of a body which can perform more jobs than the most powerful computer ever produced. He stressed further by saying brain helps to see and hear; to smell and taste; to remember how to count and recognize. In addition, he said brain is a substructure to the body that once it damaged, the whole body will be affected, that is, brain is responsible for keeping us breathing and make our heart beating. These were the submissions of Dr. Sanya.
Among other speakers that presented at the occasion include: Mrs. Aduyemi Oluwatosin, (NAFDAC), titled: Herbal Medicine; Fatimah A. Muhammad, 200L Nursing, ABUAD, Gender use of the brain; Mr. Onyia Emmanuel, NAFDAC, Strides towards safeguarding the health of the nation; Philip A. Adeniyi, CMHS, ABUAD, Your Brain is Not Poor; Moses Abu and Charles Ajayi, 200L Medicine, ABUAD, Schizophrenia; Director NDLEA Ekiti Command, Effects of Drug Use on The Brain; Dr. Mrs. F. Ojo, Head G and C, ABUAD, Human Memory And Strategies for Remembering Facts; Kesiena Eboh, 300L Computer Sc. ABUAD, From Dummy to Genius and Dr O. M. Ogundele, CMHS, ABUAD, Maximizing your Brain.
The outcome of the seminar highlighted some of the symptoms and signs that could be perceived by Drug Abusers:
- Unusual smell on breath, cloth or body
- Tremor, slurred speech or impaired coordination
- Deterioration of physical appearance
- Unexplained need for money or financial problems (may borrow or steal to get it)
- Sudden change in friends or favourite hobbies
- Period of unusual hyperactivity, agitation or giddiness.
- Lack of motivation, appear lethargic or speed out
On behalf of the Founder, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Ajisafe thanked the organizers of the seminar and acknowledged their efforts in bringing light to dangerous things that could affect the brain. He gave the vote of thanks along side with the closing remarks and suggested that all the materials used for the presentations should be kept for reference.
